What companies make rool back bed covors "hard/metal"?Anyone have suggestions andfellings about them? Are the water tight and lockable. Don't want a soft or soild hatch style.
You may be the prefect conidate for a Retrax bed cover. They aren't metal but the sales rep isn't afraid to stand on it. They 're lockable, Water tight, and roll up into a little box at the front of the truck bed. My next truck will have one of these without question! One of my buddies has one and I'm sold on it!
I have the retrac xover on my truck. I have the long bed. It has been great, I have had it on the truck for 3 or 4 years. Here are the down sides:
1. You lose about two feet of the bed. So if you do not have a long bed, could be an issue. You can slide stuff under the cover, it hangs down about 18 inches.
2. It was water tight to a point. It still allows water to enter the truck bed but not much.
3. It has now entered the end of its life. It has developed a crack between the roll up box and the front edge near the window that I may try to caulk or take the cover to the scrap yard.
4. If you laod large items like an ATV into your bed, it makes it difficult to tie down.
All and all I have been very happy with the cover. I bought it for family trips. If I decide to trash the cover, I will probebly replace with a removable or roll up cover, as it mkaes it difficult to lad my ATV. It is lockable but it only will keep honest people out.

Really? That much? It doesn't look like that much on the photos in their gallery.

Do you think that's from your ATV pushing on it? I hope you don't mind my questions, but I am planning on purchasing that cover for my long bed, and both of these items now concern me. I would hope to get more than a few years out of a cover.
You lose depth and length. The cover rolls up into a box, the box is probably 12" wide or a little more, but my cover does not go all the way flush into the box. It probably has 6" hanging out. Then the box is probably at least 12 to 18" deep, so you lose that space for staking drywall etc..
I just bought my ATV in December, and the cover cracked back in September. I loved this cover until I bouth an ATV. I can fit the ATV into the bed with the tail gate closed with the cover now if I take off the plow. The only problem is it makes it difficult to get the front tie down straps on. Not to much of a problem, I just need to remember to preplan and make sure my tie downs are in place prior to loading. These covers do work great. You can put large items into the bed and then lock the cover so they do not slide around. It's like having a cap. They work great until you need to put something in that is to big becasue of the cover. Hope this helps.
I plan on buying a retrax cover for my new 08 long bed. I have looked at all of the covers out there and for the price, quality, intended use it is the best option for me. As far as others go saying they have troubles with ATV's hitting the cover ect...a properly placed board or the like from the front wall of the bed to the ATV would prevent the ATV from resting against the cover its self, and yes preplanning on hooking the straps to the front hooks before loading will help. They are not water proof, and do not claim to be, I do not know of any that are. They do say that by using the tailgate seal it helps alot. Best of luck, I will be ordering mine soon. Best of luck.
What prices are you guys seeing. I need one for a 04 F250 short bed. I need to store tools under it when going to job site and to stow luggage under when on trips. I need to be able to lock ot and try to keep water out. I don't want a cap.

Did you see the Truck covers USA work cover? Has the toolbox with the built in storage for the roll cover. You can put tools in the tool box, and also have the storage under the roll cover.

The hard roll-ups seem to run around a grand. Not cheap. You can get a tilt-up hard cover, and even a low end cap for that money. But they have features that neither of the other type can match.
I paid 650 or 700 several years ago. I got mine from a friend who carried them in his Linex shop. So you should be able to work a deal. I watched them install and it was not that hard..

The tilt cover is no good when I haul boxes, barrels, lumber. need the bed to be open.Don't want a cap. I would have bought a van before putting on the cap.
