I recently heard a diesel truck with a short exhaust pipe that ended about under the front seat of the cab. It was absolutely the best sounding diesel truck i have ever heard. My exhaust on my 7.3 diesel is a straight pipe that ends just at the back of the cab. Would I run into any trouble if I cut my pipe up the the next hanger around the front seat and put a turndown on it to keep the exhaust down? Would it make it that much louder?
I doubt shortening the pipe that much would make any real difference in sound. I've also had carbon-monoxide poisoning before from a bad exhaust setup. Thats an experience I never want to relive.
Diesels don't produce an appreciable amount of carbon monoxide because they run extremely lean. But they do produce a lot of NOX, which turn into nitric acid when it mixes with water, so it will burn your eyes and nose if it gets into the cab.
