460 to fi300 ?
I have a 68 F100 with a 460/C6, the 460 is headed for a rebuild in the future, Im entertaining the thought of selling the bb for a boat anchor and swapping in a injected 300 with automatic od. What do I need to look for as far as a doner veh. and what would be the snags in doing this swap. Any help I can get would be appreciated, since I'm a lifetime bowtie recently converted to the bumpside blue oval

Look for a donor truck, pref F 150, '88 or newer. AOD's were trouble in early years, "88 seems to be a magic date.
You will need the ecu, wiring etc, plus engine mounts. The six came in your year truck so you may just have to move the mounts you have or find some from you vintage.
Cooling, exhaust, accessories, gauges, linkage, there's lots to fiddle with.

...I'm sorry, but why? If your looking for fuel mileage, you aren't going to gain much. My 95 with 3.55 gears and a 5 speed gets about 8-9 around town, and I'm only pushing like 150 horses. Given, on the highway it does alot better, and it does pull pretty good.... I'd swap you in a minute for a 460. I'd rather have the power than the economy, but JMHO.

I wish...A couple years ago I was doing deliveries in this truck, and driving very short trips I was only getting about 8-9 MPG around town. It was horrible but like I said before, on the highway is does really good IF I keep it under 70. It has almost 250K miles on it now, and I drive it everyday (clutch rod broke a couple weeks ago, haven't drove it since then though). It's a very tough motor, no leaks...no smokes...but I'd say a big 460 is just as durable, with twice the power.
Where you located MARTINT? If your willing to trade, I'm all for it! You still haven't said why your calling the 460 a boat anchor.....

460 boat anchor
Matt, with gas as high as it is seems like a good use for the 460 ! I am just being a smart #%&@ it is really a good engine I am just looking for a little less motor and more investment in interior & exterior. Wish yours was an automatic. As for where I am located I live about 25 mi. SW of Fort Smith,Akansas in Poteau,Oklahoma.

Those 300/4.9 L6 were no gas mileage charmers. I had a 1989, bought new, 4WD F150 with the 4.9 L6 and 5 speed manual and 3:55 diffs. I bought new a 2002 4WD F150 with the 4.6 V8 with same tranny and diff gears and get better mpg all around. Plus it's a lot more enjoyable and powerful and relaxed on the highway at speeds of 60 and above or going uphill.
While they might be considered more reliable mine leaked or burned oil to the tune of a quart of oil every 1000 miles from day one. My 4.6 burns zero oil in 5,000 miles. I'm much happier with the V8 performance and everyday livability of the drivetrain combination.
