Yeah, I dont know why you would take the time to cut the wedges off. From what you spend buying them, you recoup in the sale of the 44 to someone (with the wedges still).
i have done the dana 60 swap on my 76 f100 and this is how i did it first i went to the junk yard and got a dana 44 from another 76 that was bent and missing parts i got it for 20 bucks then i cut the wedges off (still welded to the old axle tube) went to the machine shop and had them boar it out to the same as the dana 60 ( now having 4 wedges) and you can use the stock radius arms fit everything in loose to your truck make sure everything is set up correct and spot weld in (i then took everything back to machine shop and had them fully weld it ( figured the are better welders than me ) for safety. bolted everything back up and no problems yet and has been done for 2yrs.i think there are pics in gallery but if not i can send you some
all the steering links are from the dana 44, it all bolted in to the 60 just fine, I did have to make the tie rod wider by threading it out at the adjuster sleeve 3/4 inch to achieve the proper toe alignment
Chrono. I have decided how I am going to swap in the 60. I am going to use cage arms. That seems like the easiest way. I have read several swap threads over on FSB. They are a little expensive. Around $750. The only thing that I will have to fab is the trac bar.
Still going to research this. I'm going to start looking for a 80 something srw F350 4x4. I'll take the running gear out and part the rest out.
Sounds like a way to go. Personally I just couldn't bring myself to dish out that much cash when I could build it for a fraction of that. But I guess I just get the joy out of knowing I made it... How long are the cage arms?
I'm going to just reuse my stock arms, cut, lengthen with some fat dom, brace accordingly and possibly bend for tire clearance. I'll more than likely just reuse stock brackets and bushings, but could easily got to a joint of some sort, but its just not in the budget. Figure I could do it for 50 bucks. Get some rattle cans of paint and make it pretty looking.
My problem is the ttb that I have to swap out. If I had a straight axle in a 79 I would find a 60 and install the wedges and use the stuff I already had.
This is what we are going to do in my friends 79 bronco.
Are you wanting longer arms for flex, or would stock s/a arms work fine for you? if stock would do, you could just get a set from a junk yard for cheap, and just use them as is.
Stock would work. I have thought about geting a set of stock 44 stuff and ordering a set of drop brackets. Then i could fab a trac bar. I dont need a lot of flex in Louisiana. I can always change it later if I dont like it.
I will have to look. I probably have everything but the 60 and the drop brackets. I have a lot of junked out trucks on my place in Mississippi.
