Dual shock harware- help
1.I have a 1979 F150 4x4 that I am adding the dual shock (Ford set up).
I have the two shock towers that need to be installed in front of the coil spring. The parts are D8TA-18A009 AB LH and D8TA-18035 AC RH. The holes and bolts are already on the truck. The bolts on both sides are part of the engine towers that hold the motor mounts, this will be an easy installation. The left side tower ( drivers side) also mounts the track bar to it.
2. I have a set of radius arm caps that have the lower shock bracket ( I pulled fron a 1979 Bronco). I have marked them left or driver side and right or passenger side when I pulled them. Can I install these to the exsisting radius radius arms on my F150 truck or should I use the radius arms( from the 1979 Bronco) that went with the radius arm caps?
3. When I pulled the radius arm caps with the lower shock bracket from the 1979 Bronco, the coil springs and lower plattes had already been removed, it was easy to remove the four bolts on the cap.
4.On My F150 truck I can remove 3 of the four bolts size 13/16 that hold the radius arm cap. But one bolt I can not get to with a 13/16 socket because of the lower coil spring platte. Any ideas? I can get a 5/8 wrench through the coil spring and loosen the two bolts that hold the spring and platte to the axle (Dana44). By loosening these two bolts will I be able to move the coil spring platte up a little in order to get a socket on the fourth bolt on the radius arm cap ? Or will the spring be to strong for me to move? Any simple ideas on how to get the fourth bolt out ?
5. Whats this I hear about using a matching set of caps and having radius arms that are the same ( needing two left side radius arms) ? Both of my F150 radius arms have th number 32 with the ford oval stamped on the left side of each. (left side meaning you are sitting in the drivers seat and the stamping is on the left side of each arm).
Thanks for any help.
So I went to the yard to get a new set and here is what I discovered.
The 1978-79 Bronco's that DO NOT have dual shocks are set up with a shock tower on the drivers side (LH) in front of the coil spring, this shock tower also is extended in lenght to hold the track bar. This (LH) radius cap has the lower shock mount on it. The radius arm on this side (LH) has no lower rear
(behind the coil spring) shock mount on it. Just the holes for a shock mount are visible.
The passenger side (RH) has a shock tower behind the spring coil, the radius arm on this side (RH) has the lower shock mount on the radius arm. The radius arm cap has no bracket for a lower shock mount.
So the radius arms on a Bronco with out dual shocks are different from each other. The (LH) side radius arm does not have the a lower shock mount and the (RH) side does have a lower shock bracketr on it.
In order to have dual shocks on a F150 1978-79 or a Bronco 1978-79 one needs radius arm caps with the lower shock mount for both sides and two radius arm bars that both have the lower rear shock mount along with the shock tower from in front on the coil spring and behind the coil spring.
The F150's have the same radius arm bars because the shock on each side are behind the coil spring. As are the shock towers. both of these radius arms do have the lower shock mount on them. For a F150 conversion one needs two front (of coil spring) shock towers and two radius arm caps with the lower brackets.
I was able to get a 5/8 ajustable wrench inside the coil spring to loosen the two bolts that hold the lower coil platte. I only loosened the bolts and used a pry bar to flex the lower platte up a little to remove the top inside bolt on the radius arm cap. This was very difficult and I do not recommend it. The other three bolts on the radius arm cap I could get a socket on them easliy to remove them.
I learned al ot today and am very tired but ready to install the dual shock set up. The usable radius arm caps cost $15 for both it took me about 5 hrs.
