I just picked up a C8VE 460 to rebuild for my truck. This truck is used for pulling moderate weight trailers, so Im not looking for a race motor. It will rarely see more than 4000 rpm, so the magazine build-ups would be worthless to me. Does anyone have a 460 recipe that builds its power and torque between 2000-4000 rpm? Can this 10.5-1 compression motor ever run on 87-89 octain gas, or should I lower compression (I kinda hate to do that, but...)? Im starting from scratch so nothing has been bought yet.
Try and locate a copy of the January 1991 issue of Petersen's 4 Wheel. On page 67 Dave Emanuel writes an article called "Maximum Torque" in which they outline the recipe for building a 460 that produces 501 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm. Best of all the flat torque curve produced a minimum of 444 lb-ft from 2250 up to 5250 rpm. This should be ideal for your appliction, especially if you have steep gears or a 4X4.
you don't have to build a 460 to get that much torque. a stock 460 from 1968-71 makes 500 ft.lbs. of torque STOCK. and 365 horse power. so if that article said they had to build one to get that much 501 ft.lbs. of torque they definitly did not use a early engine! the 68- 71 460's make that torque at 2800 r.p.m. on your gas question using a 10.5:1 compression motor will run on thaat gas BUT you will probally have so much spark knock it would drive you crazy. premium gas will more better suit you needs. but remember you building anticipation ,, gas is going up, up ,up, up, to who knows they ( a cnn reporter ) could reach $3.00 a gallon.
