My original window sticker says my X has a "stabilizer bar, front".
I have the tow package with mirrors and tow hitch. I'm not sure what the stabilizer bar in the rear looks like. Any one have a photo of theirs? I'm looking into the helwig stabilizer bars. I'm assuming they are better than stock?
If you have a factory one then I really don;t see a need to upgrade. I'd work on the other stuff like shocks etc. first.
If you look at the rear axle there will be a bar running th width of it from almost wheel to wheel. It goes up over the pumpkin and attaches to the frame on either end via "rods" that are about 6-8 inches long.
My X had the factory 24mm sway bar installed when I got it. There is a 30mm OEM sway bar available that bolts right in. If you try to get it from Ford for an X, it will not be listed. You need to ask for the 30mm sway bar for a super duty pickup. Cost about $75 and takes about 20 minutes to install using a lift.
Hey mine came with a front sway bar but no rear. Defiantely go with the superduty sway bar if not the helwig. Do not get the OEM for the excursion as DSmmh said.
I 'believe' if your Ex came factory equipped with telescoping tow mirrors...you 'should' also have the sway bar. It is my understanding (and I could certainly be wrong)...that the 'OEM' TOW PACKAGE included nothing BUT the mirrors and sway bar.
ALL Ex's came factory equipped with the rear towing receiver...that is on there as a smaller vehicle 'blocker-beam'...so that doesn't tell you if you have the tow package.
Going from a 24 to 30mm...well for $75 may be worth it...but to lay out $200 for a Hellwig just to replace the OEM one...well I know I would rather put that $200 into Bilsteins...as you can get 4 shipped to your house for ~$250...
Monsta gave a great description of what to look for...if you take a look...it would be hard to miss that bar on the inside of the rear axle...
Here's a picture of "part" of my Hellwig...the lowest BLACK round bar in this picture IS the sway bar...notice the axle bushing on the left and the vertical bar that Monsta talked about on the right...
Good luck,
joe.

How big is the Hellwig vs. the 30mm from the Superduty? Also what superduty is the bar from, the 250, 350, or 450? Does anybody know how big an F450 sway bar is?

Does anybody know if Ford has an OEM sway bar bigger than 30mm for the rear or is this the biggest? Also how big is the sway bar from the factory in the front of the Excursion or is a Hellwig bigger in the front or does Ford also have a bigger one for the front also?

OK, I checked this morning on my way out the door and NO rear sway bar. No sure why I would have the front sway bar but not a rear. I have factory tow mirrors.
Another interesting point is that my window sticker says "lighted step bars" but I have the chrome tubular nerf bar (factoyr OEM) side step bars.
Is this a factory mistake typo or did they change parts after delivery? I'm perplexed about this??? I did not check to see if I have physically have the front sway bar but I will now...

I'm trying to make the same decision so thank you everyone for the discussion AND the photos - sure wish Helwig would paint their bars a different color - maybe copper.
