Truck just started not wanting to shift into second without turning lots of rpms in first. also shifts down into first real quick. Tranny shifts into all other gears fine. Is it a TPS problem or something in the tranny causeing it to shift so high to get into second. Help???
Hope you don't have the failing diode tranny but sounds like it. Check out the TSB here.
BTW, welcome to FTE. Sorry it had to be for that but a lot of good advice on how to spend your money to fix that and other dumb factory ideas on the trucks.
Man oh man. I hope not. At just 25000 miles ago I had the transmission rebuilt at Diesel Transmission Technologies out of Abbotsford B.C They rebuilt the tranny and put in a new torque converter, accumulator body by ford. I would have thought updated parts would have gone in also. Anything else cause this situation? Wayne
You should ask them if they replaced the mechanical diode with a sprag one way clutch when they rebuilt the trans. If they didn't, then it's almost 100% certain that this is the problem.
I have to agree that the second gear shifting delay sounds an awful lot like the mech. diode problem. You should see if there are any DTC's. If there is code P0781, P0755 or P0756 then that's a strong indicator you have some issues. I hope that's not the case.
Make sure to post what you find out, good or bad. That's what help's everyone build knowledge. The more people that are in the know, the more people get help and answers.
For sure a diode issue, bet half of your is gone just like mine was. Cost me 1450.00 to fix with new torque convertor and tugger kit plus all parts needed to get it on the road. BTS builds a hell of a trans but I didnt have the coin but I think my truck has never ran so good with the rebuild I got. My Builder has 25 yrs expirence and has done many of these and thinks mine should pull anything and everything I want plus last a very long time and I feel that way too. Good luck and dont wait to fix her the more you drive the more cash you will have involved.

Mark, is there a particular brand or p/n avail for this sprag clutch? Would be good to know so you can request it be incorporated in case the shop isn't aware of it.
I'm sure there is, but I don't have those details. Anyone that has build any 4R100s would know of the mechanical diode and know it has to be replaced. Especially since the one in the trans is going to be in pieces and there are no new mechanical diodes to be had.
All I can add to this 2001 tranny thread is another question. Lotta help I am, huh? My father in law just bought a 2001 4 x 4 and he has no internet access so he asked me to ask the experts. Level ground, truck in gear, will not move on its' own (creep) as it should at an idle. He has to stab the go pedal pretty good to get it to move. Any ideas?
I just checked the codes and there are no codes on the truck. I replaced the ICM about a month ago and cleared all dtc's and there are no codes. will report back. Wayne

Here's a few ideas:
It could be low on trans fluid.
The internal filter may not be installed correctly.
Someone may have installed a high stall torque converter.
