460 rebuild ?

Debating rebuild vs. crate myself, and I'm wondering about cam #'s and compression ratio. The engine will be going in my '78 SRW Supercab/ Camper special, and I'm looking for a low RPM torque monster. In my past experience, I've built more for horsepower/RPM so, I'm kind of at a loss here.

if you want to run on pump gas, stay to around 9 - 9.5:1 compression, little more if going to aluminum heads.

as for cam, nothing more than about a 260 duration cam or less for good low end torque. look for a cam that gives good power range from 1500 - 4500 rpm and good vacuum at idle.

of course if you go with a stroker, you can give it a little more cam as it will be a torque monster anyways.

and don't go too hog wild on heads. want something that gives good port velocity at the lower rpms then something that is biased towards top end. good set of ported DOVE or D3VE heads (depending on pistons to get correct compression ratio) with 2.19 valves installed would probably be a good bet on this application. or even some aftermarket heads like the Edelbrocks or TFS street heads if they offer them with 2.19 valves.

just be realistic about your rpm range and match the parts accordingly. most street engines rarely see over 5k and spend most of thier time in the 1800 - 3500 rpm range.

like the previous reply, smallish cam, ported factory heads, good intake and exhaust and
good ignition system, not to much comp. it will work very well
