Camshaft and Timing Chain Help PLEASE

My truck is at the shop right now, there doing a headgasket job on it, and installing the Doug Thorley Headers. The guy said if I was looking to ever do any internal stuff to the engine now would be the time. We talked about cams, lifters, and timing chains. And simple stuff like replacing the waterpump whiles he's in there anyway. What camshaft should I look for and timing chain? I can call JEGS or Summitracing but have no clue what to ask for. I am looking for off the line power and mid range. I have a 1997 460 engine, and just looking for some quick mods, nothing to crazy, but ones that will be noticed while the engines apart right now. Thanks!

comp makes a seris of high energy cams that we have had really good luck out of. the more miled of the the two is 260comp and then there is the 268 comp cam. I had the 260 in my 73 F100 with 390, I was able to drag a 454 GMC dually across a black top parking lot bumper to bumper. With that truck I cold hook up our horse trailer full (12000 lbs) and let off the break and at idle the whole rig would move. My dad had a 460 in a 76 he used the 268comp with similar results, actually the 76 was a real beast, it had a nice smooth idle but would pull anything. I guess traction was our only problem with that truck. We had 31x10.5 on that truck and in wet grass if you put it in gear the back tires would spin.

I'm also in the middle of a refresh on my 89 460. I ordered this timing chain from Summit, but it looks like the Cloyes will fit too.

The CAM is the same one I looked at getting but didn't want to mess with the valve train right now since the motor was running so good before I pulled it. If your going to pull the valve train and install a CAM, you might want to look into doing a little porting on the heads...

How much HP can you expect from just the CAM itself and how much will the mileage suffer from the increase? My main goal was to add HP and MPG at the same time.

I just put the new timing chain on my 89 460 but was wondering what the torque specs for the camshaft bolt which holds the timing camshaft gear should be? The Haynes manual I have doesn't give me that information. Anyone?

Use red locktite. Here is a link for torque values.

Get an RV cam and roller chain and sprockets. I would have the timing chain and sprockets changed either way.

Those Haynes manuals are a joke. Most of the content is useless information and the basic information needed isn't there.
