Unhappy rear wheel not turning

after a wet drive home yesterday and a very cold night i got in to drive away this morning.

1. released e-brake (felt normal)
2. reverse / gas / CLANG!
3. was able to back up to where i usually do
4. 1st gear / gas / CLANG!
5. coasted down the road as usual
6. put it in gear to accelerate and the rear end drifts right
7. reverse works fine
8. forward is a not go. the driver side rear wheel is not spinning.
9. i put it in 4 low and back up my icy road (wheel seemed to rotate freely).
10 try forward again- no go. wheel turns backward fine, but not forward.

i assume something is frozen, but the CLANG's have me spooked. any ideas? did i break something?

i engaged and released the e-brake several times to free it up. when i release it there is plenty of slack and when i tighten it there is good tension.

puzzled

Had that happen on a cattle trailer for a big rig once, burned holes in the tires. Your brake shoes are frozen to the drum, I ended up hitting the shoes lightly with a hammer, but you won't get into yours that easy, try pulling the wheel and tapping the drum or using hot water dumped and then drive although the issue may be made worse when the new water freezes. Don't know about the clank but hopefully you didn't jack any thing up

Yep, sounds like you got a frozen shoe on the drum. I'd try hitting it with a hammer. Maybe, you can travel enough in reverse to get it warmed up a bit? Thats what I would try first. Hammering in the cold is never fun, especially on fingers.

I think the parking brake cable is frozen. In reverse drum brakes aren't as effective thats why the tire rotates when in reverse but going forward the drum brakes on out trucks have a wedging action that makes them more effective. Use a hair dryer or propane torch and heat the cable housing but don't get it too hot or it will melt the plastic coating on the cable inside.
