A frind of mine has a 2005 and he mentioned a few weeks back that the trannies are one weak spot on those trucks. A few guys he knows have had problems. Another problem area is spark plug changes - some dont go well on those trucks!
yeah they aren't loved for the plugs. its about a 4 hour job for a talented individual. i was getting the intake and valvecover gaskets replaced on my '96 in 05. they didn't get it done so they gave me a brand new '05 F150 scab 4x4 for a loaner. i amostt bought that truck, but the payments weren't within my budget at that time.
I let a shop do my plugs in my 97 when i had it. I didnt even wanna try messing with them. Had a buddy do a set in his 97 though, and he said it wasnt all that bad.
Hey guys, my xcal3 has options for changing the shift points and firmness, but I left those at stock, the only thing I used it for was for speedo correction.
The larger tires deffinity are making it work harder, but I don't usually tow anything, if some people can haul around a 5000 lbs trailer every day I would think I could run larger tires....
The dealership asked me if I had another vehicle to use and with Mieka's ranger and us both working downtown I figured it wouldn't a big deal.
I am going to see if they will run it through the detail shop for a good shampoo'ing becase of the inconvienience.
I too have heard that the transmission is a weak point, and spark plugs are an issue with 04-05 and supposedly fixed for 06 but there still is a TSB on plug removal for all years on newer 5.4's, I think 4.6's too.
I was reading about newer ford trannies and newer trannies in genral but ford seems to have replaced mechanical parts with solenoids that change shift points and they seem to be parts that go fairly easy.
used to be your clutch packs went bad and the tranny was filled with black/brown fluid because of the friction material wearing off into it...now its about soldering in or plugging in new electronic pieces moreso. That seem to be about 80/20 inside the tranny
