2002 Explorer shift problem

2002 Explorer shift problem
have 2002 explorer - 4.0 single overhead cam roughly 130k miles
4x4
6 cyclinder
not sure what is going on. my 02 explorer doesn't sound like it is shifting into gear. You can make it to about 25mph but that is it - it starts to slow down to an almost stop. There is absolutely no noise being made.
If you put the car in park and put your foot on the gas - the rpms rv up.
the 4x4 light has been blinking for a while but haven't had to use 4x4 in over a year.
The o/d light did come on for a day, then went off. Then back on a few days later, then off again. That happened like 3 times. Now it hasn't been back on for about 3 wks now
there is a code coming up: P1400 (i think it is the DPFE)...
have been told that the code above isnt' causing the pickup issue - but has to do with the 4x4 light..
Please any help is greatly appreciated
