I have been reading this forum thinking of a used 08. I am not sure yet if it is a job 2 or 3. I will check vin. It has driver memory and standard tailgate step. My ignorance lies in the term regen. What is it and what is happening?
Basically its this...
Diesel particulates in the exhaust are trapped by the DPF. Regeneration is the process by which exhaust temperatures are increased so the particulates are combusted. The frequency and length of regeneration will fluctuate as both are determined by the drive cycle. For most drive conditions, regeneration frequency will vary from 100 - 600 miles (161 - 804 Km) between occurrence and last from 10 to 40 minutes. The first regeneration does not require 100 miles (161 Km) and may occur at any time. The length of regeneration is usually reduced if a constant speed above 30 MPH (48 Km/h) is maintained.
The following is a list of normal operation while the vehicle is in regeneration, and do not require repair. If you are not sure if the vehicle is in regeneration,
IDS can be used to monitor the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) PID.
• Engine idle speed can be 1100 to 1200 RPM in park/neutral with foot off
brake.
• High idle speed drops to within 50 RPM of normal idle when the brake pedal is touched, PRNDL is actuated, or clutch is actuated.
• White smoke in cold ambients is normal and the mount will be increased
during regeneration.
• Powertrain power is limited to 325 horsepower(HP).
• Engine responsiveness may be slightly different than normal operation.
• During initiation of regeneration, exhaust smell may be noticed - especially
on new vehicles.
• Powertrain sound will be different including air induction noise (including
flutter on deceleration or engine shut down), exhaust noise, and
changes in engine radiated noise.
• During regeneration, exhaust temperatures are elevated.
Thanks for he info. I was at a lose when everyone was talking about going into regen. I am looking at an 08 with 7800 miles. Lariat with everything except nav. I looked up the different available options and the driver memory seems to be on job 3 trucks for the Lariat. I will have the vin checked and get an oasis.
I thought that our 6.4 engines were actually de rated to a maximum of 325 HP? I never quite understood the fact that we buy a 350 HP engine, as rated, but if you check the specifications, the maximum is 325. I do not have my reference material on this computer, but your comments please?
As to this thread, I then question any reduction in horsepower during regen? Like most, it seems there are so many unanswered questions to this process.
HP rating depends on transmission and final drive ratio. Manual's, and auto's with 4.88 were de-rated as you suggest. Don't know why ... probably longevity of drive train parts.
The only trucks that were derated were the F450's. In addition to that the 450's have a lower max speed setting of around 80 MPH vs the F250 and F350 of 95 MPH. The F250's and F350's are rated at 350HP. During active regen the HP is limited do to the additional fuel being used to clean the DPF. You will notice in active regen your boost is limited to around 20-23 PSI.
During passive regen your HP is not affected.

I would'nt go by that, my truck is a job 1 truck and i have driver memory. I would find it odd that a Job 3 truck would have 7800 miles sounds more like a job 2 truck. Job 2 trucks were built after july of 07. Not sure on the job 3 dates but i know they are very recent.
I can run the vin and get the oasis for you if you PM me the Vin.

I think just the F450s with the 4.88 gears are limited to 325hp and the 4.30 are not detuned.
Just curious...why a used 08'? The deals look awesome on the new ones. I have been considering it now since December. A Dallas area dealer that I had been talking to sent me information last week about their current incentives, I had been wanting to get around $38 to $39 on a new lariat...he finally got there so I test drove one and in my opinion it just doesn't compare to my 01' 7.3 in the engine compartment. I just can't force myself to get rid of the 01'.
