Crap... HELP.. OIL PRESSURE!!

Ok, so my 82,000 mile 2000 model V10 has been down for the last couple months. I was driving to work and heard DING!, looked down, and NO oil pressure.. I then immediately pulled off the road and shut it off. Thought it might be the sending unit, turned it back on, and could tell by the sound that there was no oil pressure due to the classic sound of non primed lifters and no oil layer between bearings to prevent that glog noise. I haven't heard any squeaking or other tell tale catastropic sounds, so I'm hoping I got it shut off in time. So is there any chance that the thing just got clogged with gunk? I'm hoping that it just didn't out of the blue FAIL at 82,000 miles. Is there anything I can pour down in it that might dissolve any crud? It's worth a shot considering this is probably gonna be a $1000 repair bill due to the tremendous amount of work to change the oil pump on these engines and the fact that my truck is lifted. I've already changed the oil and filter in hopes that it was just the filter that was clogged. Please help.. I MISS MY TRUCK!!

The "DING" sort of tells the tale, I'm afraid. And from what you describe, it's not just a gauge failure - it's the real deal - no pressure at all.

I'm afraid you'll have to pull the pan and check/probably replace the oil pump. The reason I say "probably" is because of that DING.

Just curious - do you change the oil or have it done? Sounds like sludge build-up may have been the culprit here.

Change my own oil.. I bought the truck used 4 years ago and it had 65,000 mile on it, so I don't know what happened to it before I had it. I'm sure that the pump is clogged or failed. Is there anything I can pour down in the thing to let it sit and dissolve sludge? I won't be getting the oil pump replaced till spring, so I'm willing to give any sludge dissolving ideas a try.

Pulling the pan on these things is a nightmare in of itself.. Not to mention I'm pretty sure you have to take the oil pan off AND tear the front of the motor down to change the pump... Ugh!!

Didn't see this one...

You could do a drain, then an engine flush (sold in most parts houses), then idle for no more than 3 minutes.
Drain again, install a cheap oil filter and cheap oil then idle for about 5 minutes.
Drain again and install a good oil filter and good oil, then watch the oil pressure - might need to install a wet gauge just in case. If the oil pressure fluctuates or never builds pressure, you'll have to replace the oil pump.

Oil pump is in the timing cover, not the oil pan

I'm thinking the bypass valve got stuck open, and at low RPMs, it can't get enough oil pressure up.

I'd start by disconnecting the oil sender, make sure oil comes out when you crank the engine, and even hookup a mechanical oil gauge to see if there's any pressure during cranking.

Maybe blow some air into the sender port to try to dislodge the bypass valve. Short little bursts - be careful, you might get oil blown back at you

But don't you have to drop the oil pan to remove the oil pump?

I'm in a forgetting stage in life...

According to my Service Manual DVD...YES...the oil pan still needs to be removed.

This is one HECK of a hassle to do...that's changing an oil pump on a V10. Things like this make me long for my 390FE!

Good luck with it lethalinjection...

Hmph....

Still gotta take off the timing cover... even more work ...

I wonder if the pan has to be REMOVED or just dropped down a few inches to clear the pump? My service manual CD didn't say...

A good friend of mine worked at a shop that did ALOT of superdutys... His account in their computer system still worked so he went and checked the schematics and stuff.. It's a HUGE pain in the ****. He said it pays 5 hours to just pull the oil pan, you have to take a few connectors off the top of the tranny, some stuff off the top of the motor, undo the engine mounts, and jack up the whole mess just to pull the pan!! He said the whole deal for the oil pump is a 15hr job which involves, the above process for pulling the pan PLUS removing the front engine accessories and timing cover. I'm gonna try the suggestions above. If that doesn't work.. I'm just gonna cry.. LOL It'll be outta commission till lake season..

Is it ok to start it and let it idle with no oil pressure?? That kinda scares me.. LOL

Just be sure to stick a pressurized nozzle down the oil filler tube until the oil comes out the tailpipe....

My grandpa told me once, while we were trying to free the hinges on his cattle trailer - "Lets spray it good with oil and let soak until we get all this beer drunk down..."

If you want to crank the engine without it starting, pull the fuel pump fuse.
