Hello my name is rick and i have a 1995 ford f150 with a m50d. the last owner used a hose clamp to hold the pins in, which i have not removed. After 3 months, the dealership told me i cannot buy a new top plate , supposedly they do not offer parts for the m50d any more. my problem is that first and second slider moves forward and backward but 1st and 2nd won't engage. I have unbolted the top plate but i did not remove it yet. Tranny guy at the dealership said maybe some "pins" slipped out of place due to loosening of the shifter and possibly i can fix it simply by removing the top plate. Any comments? i will fix this myself if its not too difficult!
go ahead and pull the shifter, as you are doing it make sure it is in nutral. when you look down inside the tranny through the shifter access hole you should see two round springloaded pins. they should be ligned up left to right with relation to your truck (passenger side/driver side) if the tranny has, as the other mechanic suggested, sliped pins you will see the pins and surrounding commponents out of line. the view should all be symetrical, with the spring loaded pins in line with each other. if they are not you can use a larg screw driver to push things back in line. I had this problem with the JY tranny I bought earlier this year, I thing they droped it on the shifter when they took the tranny out at the JY. my shifter was trashed as well. I purchased a Hurst from summit.
Also make sure you replace the rubber plugs (3-4) at the back of the tower, the ends of the shifter fork shafts, these have been known to dryout, and then fall out allowing the tranny oil to leak out under high speeds.
Use a little silicone to help seal and keep them in place.
Does anyone have a pic of what wheelinfree69 is talking about? I think this is where my leak is coming from, but just not sure exactly where I am supposed to look.
When you take the floor cover out to unbolt the tower, the plugs are at the back just below the top plate you unbolt.
You can't get at them or see from under the truck, you have to remove the trani from truck or take the floor cover off.
I found this info on FTE so do a search on M5OD trani's if you want to find out more.
Sorry, don't have pics.
