Is ther any other good way to mount tie dows in the bed of the truck? The only place now is to put thosee hooks in the top square holes. I like the way the newer trucks have the hooks on the sides.
On my 86 F150 I replaced the bed bolts with grade 8 eyelet bolts. So instead of having bed bolts that are flat on top, now I have 8 loops on the bed floor to use as anchor points.
You can purchase the hooks like the newer trucks have. I got a set of 8 aluminum tie downs for 20 bucks. I mounted 4 on each side of the box on my 86. I mounted them on the outside of the box, I bolted them through the box into a backing plate. I made backing plates out off flat steel that I coated with primer. The backing plates will keep the bolts from pulling though the fender, and they also spread the load so it doesn't deform the bed when ropes are pulled tight.
They do make fancy steak pocket tie downs now. They drop into the square holes on the bed rails, they have a chrome cover that flips open so the tie down loop can be pulled out. They look pretty neat when used on trucks with chrome bed rails. They pop down into the hole and the cover lays flat across, cant even tell you've got them when their closed.
