i love my truck, put up with some problems but all truck owners do. lately, ive been hearing a tapping noise when accerlate. quieting yet ta ta ta... im sure in the engine,, so i think. i know some 5.4 manifolds were shaved incorrectly on the right side. she does use a quart for every three,, but ford says that normal. i do smell oil so i will wash the engine and dry it with my compressor. when i gun it, the transmission hits hard,, clunk like, at fifty. again ford says its pressure being built up,, maybe,, but it doesnt do it 20 percent of the time. i just turned 30k on it today as they kids and i were going home,, almost missed the turning. asked them if they wanted to go out and high five as we ran around,, they said, Yea,, haha zero degrees... anyway..., something is going on with this engine and i have 6k to get it fixed,,, or three months, hence april 1. thanks for any advice...
Mountainman,
I have a 1997 with a 4.6 and I haven't had any "clunks" or rough shifts in fact I kinda think it shifts almost too smooth. The clunk can't be good. Does the ta,ta,ta, sound like pinging. I notice when I read alot of these posts it seems like some dealerships tell people this stuff just to appease them...I don't get it as they must have the right answers or can get them. Good luck
now its getting worse, can hear it when i let up on the gas,, also,, smell oil, wonder if its the passenger side manifold that is shaved incorrectly. gotta get it fixed.. had problems with seloniod valve at 20k. its a new truck should not have problems with engine. im gonna insist on a new one if its the manifold.
