Staring an old 460

Hey guys, I have a new 460 In a truck that has been sitting for about 3 or 4 years, I think that all I will have to do is drop in a fresh battery and it should start. Besides checking fluid levels what else should I do before turning it over?

Pull all spark plugs and pour some oil into each cylinder. Then, with a socket on the crank bolt, turn the engine over by hand several times to completely lube the rings. Might want to let it sit a little while to let the oil soak through. To be safe, you should pull the distributer and prime the oil pump/ oil system with an old distributer shaft and a drill.

Good luck!

i'd first change the oil before i would do anything, sitting that long the oil is going to be very bad. and probally draining the coolant is a good idea also, if there is water in the engine it's probally rusty so fresh coolant wouldn't hurt also. make sure nothing got down in the carb, that's going to get into the motor when it is fired. pump fresh gas in the lines, gas that old will probally not burn at all, fresh oil filter, there is another problem you might run into an engine sitting that long the seals might be in pretty bad shape, they have been dry and cold for a long while and might, i'm not saying they will but they might start leaking somewhere like valve cover gaskets. good luck.
