That says a lot. Drop off a gig of ram, and tell me how fast Vista is then. Vista wont run on anything less than 1gb of ram, it also needs at least a Core 2, to run worth while.

Vista compatible doesn't really mean diddly. It just means, there is a small chance, Vista will load without issue.
My guess is the majority of these people are trying to run it on an older machine....
I'm a comptia Certified tech. I have more than 20 years of hands on. I have had more copies of Vista fail in the first 10 mins of an instalation than I have have had on ANY piece of of software ever.
My story, isn't very different from 90% of the issues out there. Vista is hands down the biggest piece of crap M$ has ever produced.
I wonder why mine runs flawlessly then?! Any answers for that lol! Are you trying to run 32 bit programs on a 64 bit version of Vista. Vista has both a 32 bit and 64 bit. I chose for 32 bit version for the simple reason that it will play 32 bit (which is 90% of programs) and possibly 16 bit apps. I have heard the 64 bit version gives problems with 32 bit and 16 bit. There isnt too many 64 bit programs out yet, but are some games, but I dont play games, so I chose the 32 bit version.

Vista isnt as good as others but if you run the updates its not that bad. Ive run it on half a gig of ram and it worked fine, i just wouldnt try gaming or expect much multi tasking out of it.
I would rather have xp pro on my laptop, but the drivers are hard to find to get all the crap to work, so for convenience I have to stick with vista.

CompTIA is the certification that good techs have to get to stay alive in this business... I'm not talking about just problems with Vista and most of my programs not working. I'm talking about baseline installations. And talk to any GOOD tech, and they'll tell you the same thing. VISTA is a Piece of JUNK. Hell go to Staples and ask the computer dept about problems with Vista.. They'll chuckle..
Let me be a little clearer on my background, My first computer was built by the Zenith Corporation in 1971!

What make & Model is your laptop. I can probably find or know how you can get XP on it.

You musnt be a very good tech if you have had Vista fail within 10 minutes multiple times lol! Just Jokes man I guess Im just lucky!
Acer aspire 5610z. I havent looked lately for the drivers for xp pro, but if you know of any good sites or whatnot it would be appreciated.
And I know vista isnt the best. I have some computer background myself. I am a computer networker, and i took my microsoft certification, and although i didnt finish it, I do know a few things.
All Im trying to say I guess is that its useable, and it can run ok on a older computer.
I definatly prefer xp pro, and so far I have had a few problems with vista, but nothing I havent been able to work through.

For some people, yes they get very lucky with Vista, but with others it is a constant battle.
I have some software that I have to run on my laptop, because taking my server offline isnt an option. But Vista loves to make things FUBAR with it. I get changes made all by themself, or I start to compile and it freezes 1/2 way thru.
What I really need to do, is make a dvd image of my drive, zero the drive, and install XP from a 100% pure clean base, and fight with the drivers to get them to work. Now that I have access to a 3rd machine on my network, I might get it to work properly...
this is the most heated convo since the thread "My view on Customizing"
hehe... and to add to the heat..... if we are bragging up our computer knowlegdge (shot at you Secret Agent hehe)... I used to own and run my own website that used to net me $3000+/month from advertsing. This was back in the late 90's when you could get a CPM rates of $2-$5!
Edit: PS: this is friendly heat nothing serious!! You are probably right you know alot more about computers then me since youve been using them since the early seventies!!
