oil change ?

decided to start changing my own oil today. Went and bought 4gal of rotella syn. and new filter. My question is I am using a lowes measured bucket and only got out 2 3/4 gals of oil so far is this normal? or should I be worried. how much oil is in the filter?

unless you are low on oil..you should get 3 1/2 gal out..give or take a little..the filter holds about 1 1/2 qts..

your oil must have been low. Remove the drain plug, take the filter off (i poke 2-3 holes in the bottom with an awl first) and then once it all drains out, fill the filter almost to the top with new oil, install it, replace the plug, add 13-14 qt and then run it, check the level. The filter holds a quart that you would otherwise pour into the pan.

Yes, definitely poke a hole or more in the bottom of the filter prior to removing it.

Here's a write up I did a while back:

the good thing about these trucks is..they will shut them selves down when oil is low before damage is done...just refill and go if that happens..but make sure it didnt go low do to a leak..

And not only will it shut itself down, it will not start itself up.

You've also got to count the quart or so in the HPOP reservoir.

Indebt-get yourself a Fumoto if you're doing your own changes. They are worth it. A lot cleaner oil changes, and the hole in the oil filter is a big plus, unless you like oil all over your arm!! I was going to ask if the username update was coming since you own it, but IIRC, we can't change our user names, right?

A fumoto is definetley on my list. bad thing is I really wont be able to take advantage of it for 2 oil changes. I will put it in at my next change then cant "use it til the 2nd one..... Too bad you cant change your user name, maybe a one time "oops" change would be nice.

by the way 14qts put me dead center on dip stick! And she started right up in about .5 seconds, love my synthetic.
