Just redid the front end on 77f150 w/ dana 44 axels. Installed new inner and outer wheel bearings, seals, warn hubs, wheel studs, rotors, calipers, Ujoints. Did a real nice job all painted and clean.
All was well for a day or two then started hearing a clunking noise when testing in 4WD. OH NO.... Thought I must have installted somthing wrong or maybe worse. Parked the truck till the snow melted, then noticed today one of the wheel studs was broken..... and AH HA thats the noise as it's stuck behind the roter.
Q- Why would the new wheel studs be loose, not the right size or could the hub be worn, or maybe not tight to start as all new parts in axel and then broke loose while tesing.... 4/ of the 5 were loose inside the hub and could freely turn, but when I installed them they were tight, or at least I thought so...
Just wondering if I am now going to have to get a new hub, or just find a tight fitting stud.
Maby when you installed the studs they wernt pressed in the whole way, then when you drove it around they pulled through more.
When I did my rear end I put in new stud's as well.I kept the lug wrench handy 'cause every time I drove then stopped,it didn't matter how far,the lug's grew loose.I did this for probably a week, until they were seated properly.
ya gotta make sure the shoulder of the stud is completely seated onto the hub surface, running them down with a lugnut and an impact is not the correct way to do it, nor is beating them with a brass punch and hammer. When available, I like to use a 20 ton press.
Yes, I think that is what I did not do and need to do. Used the lug wrench method after beating in with a hammer. Just hope I did not damage the hub so the new lugs press in OK.
