Hey guys, My 1996 f-350 351W five speed has a problem. I cannot unscrew the check/fill plug. I gave it all I had and used my leg as leverage and still no.
Try using some PB Blaster over a period of a few days. I've also had luck with trying to tighten the bolt first to break it loose and then try to unscrew it. If you don't have an air compressor and an impact wrench, you may have to take it to a shop that does. The vibration and the twisting usually will ease them out.
Like 84-250 says just pull up the shifter boot, remove the stick and unbolt the tranny top cover, then pour in your Mercron. (well drain the old crap out first )
Mine was really, really stuck on too. Heat is about your best option. I don't know if pb blaster will really penetrate into there, but if it works go for it. Get more leverage, a pipe. Use a hammer. I had to use a 1/2" cheater bar and a pipe to get mine. Plus I had to shell out money for the cheater bar and the stupid weird 5/8s or whatever socket....
I wouldnt advise using heat...Theres lots of small metal parts that are easily warped (and subsequently broken in use) in a transmission. While a manual is not as bad as an auto in that reagards i would still strongly urge you NOT to take a torch to your fill plug...
