ok here is the deal. when i purchased the truck it used to smoke like a freight train and run like crap. i bought a set of rebuilt injectors and installed in it along with new return lines and orings. it had stopped smoking and ran alot better but it didnt have any power. it started smoking again and i tried filling the filter with diesel kleen and adjusted the timing and tried different things to make it quite smoking and yes i cleaned the cdr. ive run several bottles of diesel kleen through it and messed with the timing on several ocasions trying different settings, making trial runs and all that good stuff. i can adjust the timing to where it has lots of power but smokes, and i can adjust the timing to where it doesnt smoke that bad but has no power. a few days ago i adjusted the timing and finally hit the sweet spot, no smoke ,lots of power, purred like a kitten, and only smoked black on a hard throttle like it is supposed to, not like all the white smoke and the burning of the eyes like normal. i ran it for a couple of days with no probs and finally today i drove it about 40 miles and low and behold smoking like a freight train again. can someone please tell me wtf is going on with all the smoke, is it ip or injectors, do i need to take the injectors out and clean them and have them pop tested to see if any or leaking, i just dont have the extra funds now to buy a new pump. sorry for the long post but man im about to slap a for sale sign on it, the only thing i can come up with is the diesel kleen is loosening some of the gunk in the ip and it is getting caught in the injectors. does this sound like a rashonal explanation. come on fellas give me something on this please. lol
On the dirvers side of the IP is a long arm that pushes a piston in that sits sideways in the bottom of the IP. Check that it is free to move. Its function is to rotate the plunger cam, thereby advancing or retarding the timing as requireby the acceleration or deceleration. If it was seized up when you initially set your timing, then broke free after being up to temp on a longer run, may be your problem. Have you put on a new filter?
ive checked it several times for play or to see if it was seized and it functions like it is supposed to. as far as filters go ive changed the filter 3 times in the last three months and filled them all up with diesel kleen each time. after i take the filter off i have a habit of pouring thr fuel out to see if there is trash or water in it , and i dont see anything abnormal.
Is the OEM water separator still connected? The separator on the 6.9 is known to leak air into the fuel system. You can temporarily bypass the separator with a metal tube to see if that makes a difference.

the factory water separator has been removed and i have clear lines by the lift pump, ip return line fitting, filter housing to return line cap, and on the back of the engine where the return line goes to the tank. i dont see any air whats so ever.
From what you are describing it sounds like the timing is changing on its own. If the advance plunger is working and not sticking, and the IP to gear housing nuts are tight, I hate to say it but it sounds like a pump issue.
Others have related the same experience - timing randomly changing on its own - when the pump was on its last legs.
The fact that you replaced the injectors and not the pump reinforces this theory, since several people have also experienced pump failure when they replaced their injectors. New injectors have a significantly higher pop pressure, which can put additional strain on an already worn pump causing it to fail.
Take the return elbow out of the top of the IP.
Black chunks in the fitting are an indication that the governor flex ring is disintegrating.
If that is the case, the IP is on it's last legs.
dave i took the fitting out of the pump to see for black pieces and i found nothing. i have a question though, in side that 90degree fitting t5here is a little glass ball. what is that ball for and what causes the little pin to push the ball up?

FWIW, when my pump was failing on my first IDI, I asked the guys at Seattle Injectors (one of the better rebuilders in this area supposedly) about this, and was told that this symptom only shows up on the very earliest of original pumps, and that they changed the flex ring material pretty early on...
well i purchased two bottles of the auto-rx last night, im just not going to put a whole lot more money into this truck. ill try thre cleaner just to see how it works, and if it doesnt then ill drive it till the motor blows lol.
You can also try some Dex3 ATF in the fuel tank (1 Liter per tank), I had problems with my IP a while ago, and it cured the worst of the symptoms. Its still cheaper than getting a new pump.
