What is the difference between chip types.

Are the chips programmed for specific applications? In other words is the chip programmed differently for a F 150 or a F250 with the same enigne. Teh reason I ask is I would like to get a chip for the 5.4 in my van. I would like some more power for towing. I looked on sites and there isn't a applacation for my van. I really cant see what the diference is between a F250 with the 5.4 and the E-350 with eh same engine /trans/ rearend.

Maybe it's just marketing, but I couldn't see them changing all the paremeters for guages, wheel size and things like that. I would think they would just write over the enigne fuel metering, shift points and timing.

I'm not too up on the chip technology, but I have been in the PLC and machine tool industury (CNC service engineer) for 20 years and when I make corrections I don't write over all the other parmeters.

Can anyone inlighten my on what changes these chip make and what are the down sides to changing the chip.

In a PCM calibration (chip) for any vehicle there are tables that are specific to the vehicle itself and then there are tables that apply to any vehicle.
There are some similarities in a 5.4 F150 and F250 example you used. You are correct in that every parameter is not modified or changed. There are some areas in the PCM you just do not need to try to out smart Fords PCM calibrators.

Superchips should have vans and I think edge list them too. The difference is in the calibrations, but gas should be real easy to match up. Diesel may be iffy. I believe superchips' Cortex covers all gas or all diesel (with limitations on platforms.)

I'm due to get my Livewire monday. Can't hardly wait. I've got an accelerator feature in my new radio so I'll use that to see the difference. It also has a horsepower feature in it too.
