Has anyone tried putting an infant seat in a '97 or '98 model (i.e., no LATCH system)? The front center seat is the only one with belts placed close enough together to keep it from wiggling, but putting a kid up there doesn't seem like a good idea.
Is the truck in question an extended cab? I put my son's rear facing infant seat in the rear center and sinch the belt down tight and it dosen't wiggle at all.

yeah, are you talking about and extended cab? You have to have the carseat on the back.
I put mine in the center of the backseat also... when he was little, now that he's alittle older, and sits in a forward facing seat its right behind the passenger seat. (my subs take up the rest of the backseat)
I've had my daughter's seat in the back seat of my extended cab for 3+ years... no wiggles, just kind of a pain to take out and put back in... can't wait till she's big enough for just a booster seat!
I found that the easiest way to get a car seat in the back is to pass it over the top of the center of the front seat. I had 2 different car seats and neither of them would easily squeeze between the front seat back and the open ex-cab door, but they would slide right over the top of the center console of th front seat.
Also the outboard seatbelts in the back and the passenger seatbelt in the front have a ratcheting mechanism for securing carseats, if you pull the seatbelt out as far as it will go the mechanism engages and allows you to cinch down on the seatbelt without it loosening up. I refer to the ratcheting function as (Astronaut style) to my 2 sons when they dont want to sit back in the seat I tell them I will strap them in "astronaut style" which means I will put my foot on their chest and pull the seatbelt as tight as I can so they cant move.
