I have a 4r100 in a 2001 E350, when it is commanded to shift into 4th gear it spins out and makes a noise like a someone ran over a bobcat. I mean a real loud squeal. This is a work van with wind noise and rattles and can be heard over that. I have the trans out and tore down and cannot find any parts bad. I was fiquring on finding a planet bad. All clutches look good, band is not burnt, roller clutches are ok and sprag looks ok. I cannot make myself believe this problem lies in the torque converter. It would seem to me if the torque converter was the problem is would make a noise all the time and not just going into 4th.

The torque converter is going to try to lock going into fourth gear. It's probably a bad torque converter lockup clutch. It's not replaceable, you need to repalce the torque converter.

Thank for your input Mark. After looking alittle closer i found the overdrive roller clutch roller's freat'ed. Going to overhaul completly and replace the mechanical diode with a sprag and od roller clutch, converter, add a external cooler and see what happens.
