Electric Question.

Did some more mods to my 2002 F-250. I had the windows tinted, and added more lights. I put two lights under my bumper and two under my rack facing backward. I hard wired them to the battery. My sub is wired to the battery but i have a fuse in the line. My strobes and the new lights are not fused. SHould i grab power from somewhere else? thanks

You need to fuse them, or run the risk of burning something up. I would recommend using relays on your heavy draw items, such as lights.

HERE is a pretty good diagram using a fuse holder. Below is the same using a fuseable link between the battery and relay.

Read this thread, carefully. This is what happens when you don't fuse your power circuits.

This was just gauges. Imagine what that heavy wire you used for the lights will do when it shorts out!

It's really not confusing at all, once you see it. It allows you to use heavy wire gauge for the lights to battery and a lighter wire for the switch. The switched wire energizes a magnet in the relay that pulls a set of contacts together which connects the battery to the lights. The heavier wire allows for better voltage and less chance of overheating. The smaller wire has very low amp draw since the relay is to only thing on it and less chance of heating up. Plus a smaller wire is nice when running it in the cab area and to the fuse panel. The bad thing about wiring direct to the battery and not through a relay, you have a direct hot wire in the cab of your truck at all times. One side of your switch is hot at all times. I also think your lights will be brighter if a heavyier wire is used with a relay and less wire is needed since the switch is on another wire.
