Question E4od / PSD

Used a donor Quigley van to convert my 95 Clubwagon to 4x4..all went well

now I bought a donor van to convert to PSD. While proving out the drivetrain, before the conversion, I am experiencing a totally weird / new problem (new to me anyway)

The new van is a 95 E-350 PSD / E4OD. Well maintained van I purchased from a Municipality. I found a sticker on the trans it is a Ford re-man.

When I shift into R or D one of three things happen...
it goes in normally or
the Psd will come under a heavy load and then speed up to a normal (in gear)idle or.....
have so much of a load it STALLS like it was a standard shift and you let the clutch out to quickly (if you shift into gear, no brakes applied, the engine will load and recover and the van will rapidly pick up speed, no throttle)

Any ideas guys, Thanks, Al

You have a pressure leak in the pump. Its venting pressure from the torque converter charge. Loss of converter charge allows the converter clutch to apply and that kills the motor. Just exactly as you describe.

A less common problem is the valve that controls the converter charge is sticking or the solenoid is sticking. My bet is the pump. Seen it too many times.

Assuming its the pump you will need a new/reman pump. And if going that far you might as well pull the rest of the geartrain out and see what it looks like. A light overhaul would be a good PM at this point. It would really suck to put a new pump in it and then find out that something else was on the way out a few months later.

Thanks, and...I just brought it home last nite...now I have tranny fluid on the driveway.....ummm....a quick look looks like the front of the trans...could a "pump pressure leak" vent itself "externally" like fluid coming out the bellhousing? Thanks, Al

Well, not *that* pressure leak. More than likely, the pump is worn badly and/or the pump bushing has spun.

Either way, it has to come out for the fix. So pull the transmission, remove the converter and inspect the neck, front seal and pump bushing.
