Anybody got suggestions regarding headliners for my 56 F100? I bought Mid 50's ABS headliner which is actually a Rod Doors headliner and for the life of me I can not get that sob to fit in the truck right. I am looking to have what ever I get covered with fabric. I really don't like the OE cardboard type but don't want a total custom either.
Any advice is good advice even if I don't like it!!!
Bing ,I"m not sure which choice you went after at Mid-50, I think they offer 3 different ones ..and the cardboard ,But they say one goes in pretty quick..1hour ,I guess thats not the one you"ve got ,it is plastic though rite?? I"d assume the old one is in a pile somewhere, maybe use it as a '"rough" pattern, try not to cut off anymore than nec,and use some pre-planning on the method to attach it..then fold it carefully ( more like roll-it) crawl in the cab , point it in the right direction , and let go!! Good Luck!!
There was a previous thread by Fatfenders on his install of the RodDoors headliner as I recall. You might try a search using his handle or just RodDoors and see if it comes up. He related some of the difficulties and how he overcame them on the install. Check out his gallery also. Dwayne hasn't been on here much since he returned from Iraq but maybe he will also see your question.
Hey guys, I usually answer all the upholstery questions here, but I'm not to that point yet on my buddy's truck? He has bought one of the abs plastic headliners. When I get to that point on his truck, I'll use my old junk roof cut to mock it all up. I keep alot of junk cut off parts from various trucks of various years.
His truck is goin to be a little different in that he will have an overhead console, which I hate, but it's his truck. So far on this guy's truck it's kind of like putting 50 lbs in a 5 lbs sack. Everything I go to do, is a challenge with all the extra stuff he wants to use. I'll try to get the abs mocked up soon, so I can tell you how I did it and if you want to use my example, I'd tell you all I know (wont take long)
I actually have the "pretty quick" one. I called them and they say it will install in about an hour but they must be smarter than me. I have tried several times and not get it to even start to install. I sent a PM to Fatfenders and will post any reply he gives.
I'm making mine out of flat ABS sheet. I haven't completed it yet, so it could still be a miserable failure, but it looks promising right now. My progress can be seen in my album here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...&albumid=31331
there is a product called fexi ply out there. it is a 3/8 plywood with the grain layed up so's it bends almost like rubber in one direction. i get it @ the RONA store in the city
dunnoo iffin' any of the big chain building supplies stores down there carry it, but havva look around.
i took the original masonite headliner pieces used em' as patterns to cut a new one.
then made cardboard patterns for the back of the panel body roof and cut flexi ply pieces for back there.
i then applied sprayglue and wrapped them with a low pile polarfleece cloth (that looks like modern factory headliner mat'l.) but inna black red yellow & orange flame pattern.
and screwed it all in with those black plastic caps over the screw heads.
looks sweet, i getta lotta compliments & wows on it

I too am using a roof console but am splitting the headliner and using a wood tack strip on the sides of the console to attach the headliner (the console is welded in front and rear) Hey there economan, hows about building a gallery so we can all see that headliner of yours

BFoot, Did you buy the one-piece unit or is it in three pieces? The one piece is the new improved model. Just like Joe said, it's supposed to be fairly stright forward. Joe, did that one piece use the stock "Z" rubber that runs all around roof and down the back of the doors? I used the three piece for my truck, and followed Dewayne's instructions. Not easy, but it did fit. Jag
