it is not the current that causes the issue it is the HP it consumes from the motor that causes a reduction in MPG...

I know it is better to keep the seals lubed, but I only connected my compressor for a week last year...

Hello tfowler
The current issue is Tobwy ask how many amps the compressor draws on start up. So he could add a switch on the dash.
I'm not sure, but I am sure it is not a big number, based on the size of wire Ford used.

Whoops I guess I missed that post... sorry for the confusion.

The compressor is connected with a 16 AWG wire so the compressor clutch cant pull more than 5 amps or Ford would have had to use a larger wire. This wire can handle a spike of inital start up current around 15 amp over a 10' length...

so a standard switch and 16AWG wire to install a switch would be more than sufficent.

Ps.
I am somwhat familiar with OEM wiring in my job as an Audio test guy for OEM amplifiers at Harman Becker(JBL, Infinty, Harman Kardon, Mark Levinson)

Good stuff here!!! I think I'll find a small switch capable of handling 15A and then splice that inline with some more 16ga wire, and see if it's a repeatable thing for me... Might be taking a ~500 mile trip this weekend with the Jeep in tow, so this would be a great test because I've got my log book from several identicle trips to compare it to!!

To accurately compare mileage, you must make at least 2 round trip trips in similar climate/temperature.

You can not accurately test by checking one way there and another way back.

I hope that you are comparing round trips when you say camparing to old logs.

Also should use same fuel.

please report your findings I'm still having a hard time understanding that the a/c would SIGNIFICANTLY reduce mpg, especially at highway speeds.

I will second that, i could see a little drop but not so much to warrant even messing with it...

Agreed, however here's how I see it: I spend $5 on a switch, $2 on some wire, another $2 on some split loom to make things look tidy, and spend about 20 minutes splicing into the compressor wire and installing the switch in my dash. Let's say it actually does make a minor difference, say even 0.1 miles-per-gallon... With my truck getting a stellar 7mpg and regular unleaded selling for $3.25, it's going to take me all of about 1400 miles to "warrant" my investment

7?????
Ya get 7 mpg!!!!???
Wowser you are making Buff seem like a fuel miser at 13mpg.
If I was getting 7 mpg, the 500 mile trips would be very few and far apart.
You have my sympathy.
Hope it gives you at least .3 difference so it pays off in one trip.

Tell me about it... Luckily, I have a company vehicle that I drive during the week, so my F-350 is more or less a weekend-only affair. That being said, I'd still rather pay $3+ per gallon for gas and NOT HAVE a $600 truck payment ON TOP of that!! They can keep their 15mpg $40,000 diesels

I will surely report whether or not this works out, although I don't exactly have high hopes. This all stems from one trip, wherein for whatever reason, I DID notice a marked difference in economy and the ONLY thing that was notably different than every other trip just like it was the HVAC setting...

better mileage with ac compressor plugged in

Okay - here's one that has stumped anybody I have told this too...

I have a 91 F150 5.0, auto... My AC compressor kicks in all the time, no matter what if it's on defrost, vent, etc. I checked my mileage, and with the AC compressor plugged in, I get around 17mpg. So I unplugged the AC compressor (mainly because it's annoying to listen to)... can anyone explain why I dropped to 10MPG?!?!.... I had to plug it back in, and now my mileage is back to around 17-18 mpg....

Am I missing something here???
