Locating a 460

Howdy guys...I'm thinking about swappin out my 351M for a 460. I just need to know what year vehicles had them. Preferably a non-catalyst one. Thanks all!

Robert

Your best bet would be either an early (68-76) lincoln engine, all the continentals had 460, or a ford truck.. larger (f250,350) trucks came stock more often than not with a 460. Just snoop around.. Post back and tell me what your goals are... (horsepower, torque, mileage...etc.)

Well...I'd like to build one for all-round purpose. Meaning I do some mud bogging, hwy driving, and ocassional rock crawling. I would like to get about 400-450 hp out of one with about 500-550 ft lbs. torque. Does this sound reasonable?? Mileage..well...I know it's goin to suck with those kinds of numbers. No way around it. Can't be too much worse than this 351M I'm running now. Ok...now one other quick question. Will a 460 bolt up to a NP435 tranny?

For those kinds of numbers and the durability for performing multiple uses, I'd start with a truck block and work up from there..
No, those numbers arent unreasonable.. In fact, they are rather easy to get.. 9-9.5:1 compression, a decent intake (I recommend the Weiand Stealth), decent heads (either aftermarket or reworked stockers), 3 angle valve job or something similar, and a good stiff cam.. I'd say something around 220 deg. duration @.050", with at least .500 lift. If you can, get a dual pattern cam (exhaust is longer duration than intake)..
With a decent carb, (holley 750, 780, etc..) You should be getting somewhere between 10 and 12 mpg... I was getting upwards of 14 out of my 460...TIll I threw a rod.
Have fun!

I would order a P.A.W. catalog. You can get a 460 long block balanced for $2000. In my area that would of saved me a ton. In any case its not a cheap swap but its well worth the power gains.

You can get a quality 460 engine from a lot of engine suppliers. It all depends how much you are willing to spend. As for used 460 engines. Many Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles used these engines. Both 429&460 versions. Trucks came with the 460. Passenger cars could come with either the 429,or the 460.The 429 could have a 2 bbl.,or 4 bbl. carb. The 460 was strictly a 4bbl. engine until mid-'87 when it was given EFI. You can get a used big-block and have it rebuilt, but F.R.P.P. offers some nice ready-to-go 460 engines, AND a 514 behemoth! Also, many aftermarket manufacturers offer stroker kits for the 385-series big-blocks,so you can go larger than 460 cid. My Dad had a '74 Lincoln with a 460,which many guys said wasn't as good as the '69-'71 year 460s. Nobody wanted to buy the 460&C-6 out of it,so he sold it to the local junkyard for $75! Two days later we went there to search for a used part. Lo and behold, there was the Lincoln....minus it's engine& trans. The point being ANY 460 is worth having, and has loads of potential. Again it all adds up to what you want to spend and what you want your big-block to do. The '74 460 was rated at 212net horsepower...with 8.0:1 compression. After '71 Ford cut compression ratios of all it's passenger car engines. Truck engines nomally have lower compression ratios to begin with,so the changes were less severe. When I look back, we should've yanked the 460&C-6 out of his '74, and sold them. I'll bet it is now in a 4X4 truck, streetrod, or racecar.
