Hi, I have a 460 in my 79 ford truck, and was wondering what I can do for under $1,000 to get the gas milage up! The truck is all stock, I was thinking maybe a different carb, but what kind? What else can I do to get the gasmilage as high as possible. Would 14 even be acheiavable?
I would really like this thing to be more of a driver
Thanks
with a 460, high mpg figures arent exactly going to be something that your going to run across. but with any engine, the way to get better gas mileage is to in actuallity make it more powerful. put on a set of headers and a good free flowing exhaust, maybe a k&n and if you feel like it a good carb, i have heard that edelbrocks are good for getting better gas mileage...but the only way your going to get GOOD gas mileage is to buy another car and use that as a daily driver.
I also have a 460 in a '78 F150 2wd. My rear gears are 2.75's. The truck gets ok mileage on the highway, but terrible in town. The engine has to work too hard to get the truck moving after every stop. I plan on changing gears to 3.50's or even 3.73's. That alone will help mileage out considerably. Make sure your ignition system is in top condition, and keep that carb tuned up.

LAST EDITED ON 15-Sep-01 AT 09:10 AM (EST)[p]I don't know about the gears. I have 3.50's and I still get 9mpg city highway, it don't really matter. Though if you do build up the power more, you will have a hard time not taking advantage of it.
But as a reference, my work truck a 98 CH**y 4x4 with a 350, ext. cab, averages 14mpg. But that is alot of city driving, off-road driving, and hard driving as well. My vehicle before that was a 92 Bronco w/ a 351 and it only got 11 or 12 mpg. So getting 9 or 10 out a 460 carburated ain't that bad when you look at the big picture. Plus which one is more fun to drive? Can't wax an unsuspecting ricer in my work truck, but the ford, no sweat.

Let off accelerator early if you know you are going to have to stop anyway (if the light is red and you know you are going to have to stop or slow down let off the accelerator as soon as you know this instead of wasting all kinds of gasoline driving full speed to the light and then slamming on the brakes).
