Im thinking of using a solid lifter cam in my 460. Do I have to do any oiling mods to get oil to the rockers? Do roller rockers have adjustments for solid lifters? How about some opinions on solid vs hydrolic.
The solid lifters must be adjusted more frequently than hydralics. You adjust them by setting the lash within a certain measurement. Hydralic lifters since they pump up with oil don't require frequent adjustments and are easier to set. Just set the preload on them and your done. The solid lifter can be used with what ever rocker arm you want.
What is your goal with this engine...? Is it going to be a street engine, kind of low-maintenance, one that you wont have to do much to keep it running right? If so, I'd stick with a good hydraulic lifter setup..
If you are looking for the high-RPM use that a solid will get you, get a hydraulic roller setup... the pricing can be comparable, depending on where you look..
If it is convenient, I'd stay away from solids as long as I could.. In terms of parts to break, sure... they will last long time. But in terms of time invested to keep the valvetrain working properly, I have found that they are almost not worth the benifits, except to maybe someone (like a racer) who would tear down the engine anyway in relatively short time. Just my opinions, of course... Best of luck!
