Overheating

K i kno its been awhile since guys seen me on this part of the forum since i bought my new baby. But we kept the old 1978 to fix up as a beater And since we got the new motor in there, It keeps running hot no matter wut we do. Flushed the radiator, took out the thermostat and still nothing. It doesnt have a fan shroud could that be it? Shouldnt it only run hot going downt he road?

Fan shroud helps a little but not to much.

Check the belt on the water pump, or it could be the water pump itself.

How hot is it running? Does it puke coolant? I hope you are not using the stock gauge to determine if its hot or not.

I had over heating problems with a 2 row rad and a 302 , thought it looked cool without a fan shroud 20 years ago . Ran hot all the time . So finally bought a 3 row wider rad and 15 inch electric fan and ditched the stock fan . Runs cool all the time and I rarely run the electric fan , traffic and drive thrus yes I turn it on but thats it . Water pump has lasted 8 years without any problems , the weight of the fan and spacers wear the water pump bearings out pretty quick . Good luck . It should run cooler driving it and I would never not run a thermostat , use the fan shroud , the fan needs to be as close to the rad as possible to pull heat .

The gauge doesnt work its running so hot it trys to keep running after we kill it. Or thats wut I was told. I kno after running or idling a while and u kill it keeps tryin to run and eventually dies. The only reason it doesnt havea thermostat is because the mechanic didnt put it in when he told its running to hot. The truck didnt come with a fan shroud and its almost impossible to find one, except brand new and they want a fortune. Im really tired of dumping money in it, Weve got almost 2 grand in it already. Im seriously thinking of waiting till I graduate in 4 months and dropping in a 300 six.

Get a thermostat in there and adjust the timing and carb so it doesn't diesel when you turn it off.
