odd restart question

I've found an odd problem with the "sreamin chicken" (96 dump truck in sig). With the engine at running temp it won't restart without using the glow plugs. Normally I use the GP's every time I go to start any diesel but I last time it snowed I stalled the truck while plowing And not thinking just cranked it over...no fire.... Turned it back on, waited for the WTS light to go out and fired right off.
Noticed yesterday when I went to move the truck the GP's weren't working, haven't taken the time to check the GPR. Tried cycling the plugs a few times before cranking and nothing but smoke. Plugged it in and an hour later fired right off. Thanks for any thoughts

The hot start makes no sense. It should have refired easily without the plugs when it was hot. The cold start does sound like the relay.

Yeah that's what has me stumped, hot it should take right off. I don't know for sure how old the batteries are, they were in the truck when I got it. Starting speed is normal though so they should be alright.
