i have 3.08s in my f-150 it only has 58k miles on it and i was thinking about putting 3.55s and i was wondering if it would be a good idea to get the gears from a junkyard or buy them new
If you can open the diff and see the gears before you buy them, just check for chips or gouges. If they look to be in good shape then there's no harm in using them. You WILL, however, want to buy a new rebuild kit (seals, bearings, shims, etc).
If donar truck has low miles 100000 ish get em . I have the 3:55 rears laying all over . r Like 150 a set here . Becuase all parts trucks sitting around. But finding a LS rear may be problem .
I middle of doing a 3:55 swap into a 300-6 5spd Truck . Heck lot more fun.
Yes you'll need to regear both axles to match. But with the 300 you won't want to take your gears very low because you'll lose the low end torque that the 300 is so famous for having.

3.08 to 3.55s will give you approx 200 to 300 rpm more at 60 mph assuming 30 inch tires and a .78 5th gear. That ain't much...
Randy's Ring And Pinion has excellent prices...check out their website......do NOT get cheap gears....I have heard that the Motive gear sets are loud.....look for the gearsvwith a polar bear in the logo...I wanna say Klondike but that's far fetched.....Luck
Yukon makes good gears. Auburn and Richmond are good too. And don't forget factory gears (Ford or Dana Spicer, depending on the axle), can't go wrong with OEM parts
