Hey guys, 95 F350 PS
I am hearing a hissing noise coming from the turbo area at idle, it also has an exhaust leak that I cannot find. The hissing noise also occurs while driving when you let off the gas and at the beginning of acceleration. I am hoping the noise and leak are from a blown gasket??? How much trouble to take turbo off?? I would also like to change the exhaust manifold gaskets, the pass. side bolts look pretty bad, any secrets as to easiest way to remove manifolds???
Thanks in advance for any help
Randy
I believe that you are describing the operation of your exhaust back pressure valve. There is a 2 wire connector at the base of your turbo, disconnect that plug and your hissing problem should go away. Some of us use this EBPV as an exhaust brake. If you would like the instructions to change it let me know I will post a link.
I have two '95 350's, and my other one does not make this hissing noise. Is it possible it does not have an EBPV? There has to be an exhaust leak, I can hear it and smell it in the cab when driving. just can't find it.
tjbeggs, yes it's a Centurion 4 door Bronco, and yes this baby is sweeeeet! I have wanted one for years and came across this one in NC about 6 months ago. 1995 F350
PSD, auto, all the bells and whistles except leather, 83,000 miles. Looked like it was garage kept. Couple of small easy fix blemishes, but otherwise perfect. No I do not have pics yet, but will post some soon. Had intended to have them posted by now, but just haven't gotten round toit. I also have a 95 F350 crew, PSD, 5sp, duelly with the Centurion package. Just got it 2 wks, this is the one with the problem, other than that a good truck. will post some pics of it also.
it is possible that the sensor that regulates the pressure is plugged or not functioning, and of course it could be an exhaust leak, that is just not near as common, especially this time of year
where is the sensor located and can it be cleaned? if it is not the sensor, then what is making the hissing sound? I still believe it has an xhaust leak because you can hear it when the motor is under load going up hill, etc and you can smell it in the cab. but still no signs of carbon that i can see.
tjbeggs, in your last message you said "here is a thread that is your problem", i'm a newbie so this may be a dumb ? but where is the thread?
take the time to unplug the plug at the base of the turbo, good trouble shooting if nothing else, if that solve the problem then we can work on getting the sensor cleaned if you want to, if not we can start chasing a less likely line. Also make sure that the EBPV linkage is connected and holding the gate open.
i'm new to the diesel world so bear with me. ok, if i unplug the EBPV and the noise goes away, what does that mean? and what is the fix? another thread refered to a dash switch?
is it possible that the noise and exhaust leak are connected?
why does one 95 make the noise and not the other? the one that does not make the noise is bone stock, doesn't look like anyone has fooled with anything, but i guess the EBPV could be unplugged. will check both when i get home.
thanks so far for the info!!

OK, went home the other day and the noise was gone. the air temp was about 40, does air temp have anything to do with the EBPV? temp has been above 35 for last 4-5 days and the hissing is gone?????
so is there a problem i should be concerned about when it gets cold and makes this hissing noise?? or should i just unplug and forget?? what is the purpose of this EBPV??
The valve is functioning as it was designed to when its cold. BUT the design is poor and the EBPV does do it job very well. its supposed to help with faster warm-ups but without a high idle it doesn't do squat. I would unplug it and never look back.
Edit- This is one topic 2 stroke man and myself will never agree on. LOL
