Well last winter I bought two new batteries from NAPA and now this winter I find they dont have much power in them and last weekend they even died after only like 15 seconds of cranking. Last night I noticed my voltage was low on my factory guage. Lower than usual that is. Could it be my alternator is starting to go? It only turns over about 300 rpm when I go to start it. They just seem a little weak. Anyone know much about alternators and all that??
Hi, check your battery connections, sometimes they look good, but still they could be corroded. Fluid level i batteries? If you have a volt meter, you cam measure how mutch it is giveing. I get about 14,3 volts on mine.
Mine has an external regulator, and I have changed that one once. That time I had a simlar problem like you have now.
thanks for the info. Ill check everythin tonight and if worse comes to worse Ill just remove the alternator and get it tested with the batteries this weekend.
14.3 volts with the engine running and about 12.6 after you turn it off. If the values aren't different, then the alternator/regulator isn't charging. If you get less than 12.6, then your batteries are not fully charged.
Check if the voltage goes down during the night (before trying to start again). If it does, that would indicate a drain somewhere (dome light, brake lights, radio, etc).
and if you have over 14 volts running, it is a very good possibility the battery cables are bad. i bought a new starter for my 88, and then found the positive cable was bad.
