6 volt, not 8 volt.and it should also be positive ground.
to convert to 12 volt negative ground is quite easy. just change all the light bulbs to 12 volt, add a ballast resister in the line powering the coil, change the generator , (the easiest way to do this is to use a Chevy alternator with built in voltage regulator) and switch the wires on the amp-meter.
as for the starter, you can go 2 ways. either leave the 6 volt unit in there till it burns out, or switch it to a 12 volt unit.

i have done this on many farm tractors. most of them still have the 6 volt starters in them after as much as 20 years of continuous use.

He may have a 8 volt battery. Some people put 8 volt batteries in 6 volt vehicles to give them a little more oomph and make the lights a little brighter.

I can't remember now, but I thought when I changed my old f100, I had to turn the coil around when I went from + ground to the normal negative ground.

If you have an original radio, then it will not work anymore.

See if you can get a later model wiper motor that is 12 volts(unless you have vacuum wipers).

Also see if you can get a later model blower fan that is 12 volts.

I have done this on a couple of 9N tractors. Used a 12 volt coil and condensor. The condensor does not have to be inside the distributer. Never had a problem with the starter. Because it is now 12V rather than 6, it turns faster. Don

if possible it is better to run a 6V starter on a 12V system it will actually last longer than a 12V starter
