Just bought an 05 explorer eddie bauer. Very Sweet ride! Only got one key with unit. I know it has en electronic ignition key, so I called my local ford dealer and enquired aboiut getting a new one. Imagine my suprise when the parts guy says $165.00 ($40 for the key, the rest labour to program it!!!!!)
Is there a way around this or is this dealer making me grab my ankles????
My dealer said $20.00 for the key and $20.00 to program...I would find another dealer.
If you have 2 keys I guess you can do it yourself. Which I'm gonna do...
Seriously. Like the above poster stated, if you have only one key, they HAVE to get into your PCM to get the key codes. Do shop around at various dealers and pit them against each other. It really only takes them 15 minutes to do this.
If you have 2 keys, it's a 30 second job for you to program the 3rd.
FYI: When I bought my 04 F150 I got only one key. Took it to the dealer that I have been using for 10+ years. Just like you, got a bill for $165 bucks. I politely complained to the Service Manager about it, and while he was also polite, he basically said, "That's our price." I paid.
Oddly enough, about 2 hours after I got home my Service Writer called me (I have used this same guy for the whole 10+ years) and said he had heard of a problem I had and wanted to know what it was. I explained that I know they have to make money but I felt that $165 bucks for 15 minutes of work on a key was truly outrageous. His response: "What can I do to make this right."
Me: "Charge me half of your list cost.
Him: "Done."
Helps to: 1) politely complain and 2) build relationships with the Service Writers
I paid $120 to have 1 key made for my 2000 exploder because I only had 1 key. The charge for the key and the cut was 28.00 the rest labor. I priced several dealers in the Houston area and the all gave me the same price. With my new to me 2005 explorer I got 2 keys but did not want to be raped if I lost one so I had an extra one cut for $28 at the dealer and programmed it myself in under a minute.
