Hey I'm looking into buying a 1992 F250 with 460. It is lifted with 35's. The only thing I'm concerned about is it that it has 150,000 miles and neither the motor or tranny has been rebuilt. I know that big blocks aren't known for their reliability or lifespan. I would like to know how long this motor will last. I am familiar with the Navistar diesels and the 302 and 351. I understand that both motor and tranny may need to be rebuilt. If that is the case, how much do you think that it will cost, or should I just look for a different 460 that runs with lower mileage to drop in. This would be a daily driver but, I don't drive much and I want to have fun in the mud. Anything helps...
dad has a 91 350 superduty with the 460 it was a box truck and now has a flat bed on it anyways it has 184k on it and still runs great so im not sure but the guy he bought it off of hadnt rebuilt it and i know he hasnt only thing tht made it run bad was the plugged cat no theres straight pipes on it and runs great.
460 is a reliable motor, don't know where you heard it wasn't. 150K isn't bad on one of these motors, it should be fine for a while. Trans should be okay for a while too, unless it's been neglected. The trans problems are usually associated with the diesels- the extra torque from the diesel motor takes its toll on the tranny. My 95 460/E4OD truck has 141K and still runs and drives fine. The bigger problem on that truck is the lift and tires- the heavier tires wear out ball joints in record time- if your front tires tilt in at the top when looking at the front of the truck (like this /----\) then the ball joints are hosed and need to be replaced. Buy mine instead, it's a nice truck
My '89 with a 460 just hit 215000 miles on it's original engine, and is still goin' strong. No telling what kind of maintenance was done on it before I got it, but it's my daily driver here lately.
I trust the engine to outlast the rest of the truck.

It's all a matter of perspective. I don't have a $200+ a month car payment, I don't have to keep full coverage insurance on it (around here that's another $150-$200 extra a month), and it costs me almost nothing in maintenance. I haven't spent more than $25 on a single part I've replaced, and then I've only replaced maybe four parts. All in all, I figure with spending about $80-$100 a month on fuel is worth saving what I'd spend on a "fuel-efficient" new car.
Add in the fact that I *enjoy* driving this truck, so it's worth a little more at the pump for the "fun factor" I get from it. It's big, it's rusty, it's really quite ugly, and it's loud. Plus, it's incredibly powerful. There are times at work where we've got a delivery to take that's a couple of pallets worth of items that easily weigh over a ton and a half. Our E-250 van just can't handle it, so we'll load it all up in my beastie and away I go!
As long as I don't hot-rod my truck (which I do, but VEEEEEEERY rarely) I can make a tank of gas last two weeks.
Next year, I may be getting a nice little fuel-efficient car (35+mpg) from a friend of mine, but 'till then I'll enjoy my hunk o' junk.
Mine gets 13-14 empty, just bend over when you pull up to the pump.
i wish my girl said that to me lol but in all seriouesness im assuming thats on the beltway i would love to see a f150 shortbed regular cab with a 460 that be oe fast truck with alot more potentental theres just something i love about thses older generation trucks they sound so good my buddies 98 4.6 doesnt sound as good as the 5.0 i was looking at it, the 5.0 seeemed more of a muscle truck and more fun to drive .
Yeah, I'm still in the old-school belief that "There's no replacement for displacement".
The bigger the better, in otherwords. Too bad the fuel price issue is killing off a lot of the market for such things. Not as many people are building hotrods and muscle cars, or even muscle trucks anymore because of it.
tryin not to get of toppic my dad still has his 79 camaro with a 454 its sweet looking and it has a turbo 350 trans and 342 gears and to tell the truth its not that bad on gas considering its a big block he wants to sell it but i want to drive it this summer .

Well, I could list off the engine mods I did, and the various other things I've done to the car, but that would take a while. Also, comparing a Camaro to a Corvette is kind of silly... That's like comparing a Mustang LX to a Saleen. It's just not the same thing.
Plus, what's the gearing your 'vette is running? That has a lot to do with it as well.
the vette also has 342 gears with a 6 sp and a saleen mustang and a lx to me a mustang is a mustang still alsome car i like the fox bodies alot even know every one has one there cheap and more of a play car.
