1992 460

Hey I'm looking into buying a 1992 F250 with 460. It is lifted with 35's. The only thing I'm concerned about is it that it has 150,000 miles and neither the motor or tranny has been rebuilt. I know that big blocks aren't known for their reliability or lifespan. I would like to know how long this motor will last. I am familiar with the Navistar diesels and the 302 and 351. I understand that both motor and tranny may need to be rebuilt. If that is the case, how much do you think that it will cost, or should I just look for a different 460 that runs with lower mileage to drop in. This would be a daily driver but, I don't drive much and I want to have fun in the mud. Anything helps...

I used to have a '97 F-250 4x4 with a 7.5L/auto great running truck. Had 156,000 miles on it when I sold it . 460's are known for their reliability if taken care of. They easily go 200-250 thousand miles with maybe a timing chain replaced. They only get about 12 mpg but are strong reliable motors.

I agree with machmedic. From my limited 460 knowledge, they are pretty stout motors and with a little maintenance can go into the 200k+ range easily. The OD and EFI also add longevity to the equation. If the motor seems to run fine and has no negative signs, I would not have a worry about it.

The trans on the other hand, I would expect to need rebuilding almost immediately.
