I have a 97 F250 HD and wan't more go power from the 460. I have Gibson headers and a flowmaster SIDO, but wondered if I could do anything to the engine internals without having to deal with the computer. Specifically, could I put a new cam with a moderate profile with all roller parts in? Or does the computer need to be reprogrammed to work with the new profile? How about higher pressure injectors? Any hints/tips would be greatly appreciated.
On a side note, I read in another board that performance chips don't do much to distributer equipped engines (like mine) only DIS systems? Any truth to that?
Can't change the cam to much without upsetting the computer. Well unless you converted the truck over to mass-air. I wonder if that is possible being a 460. I know you can convert speed density 5.0 to mass air with only a few wire splices, and new parts.
Or you can bolt on a supercharger and use an fmu to get your fuel right.
What is the difference between speed density and MAF? I know what a MAF is, where it usually sits and what it does, but what is speed density, and where is the sensor (if any) located on my 460? Thanks...
speed density system measures the amount of throttle and air temp. and looks up in the computer a table that tells it how much fuel to inject in this condition. So if you change how much duration/ lift on a speed density set-up the tables will be way off and you will have poor drivability. Vs. mass air which measures how much air the motor is using and adjust fuel app. It can adjust for diff. heads, cams, intakes, etc.
Some '97 460 trucks came with Mass Air via the factory. Before you spend the money to convert it from Speed Density to Mass Air make sure your truck isn't already MAF.There are some aftermarket cam companies that offer computer-compatable cams for Speed Density EFI460 trucks. My '94 EFI460 has a mild Crane Cams camshaft in it.
"Speed-density" measures engine vacuum ("density") and RPM ("speed") and figures out the airflow from these two values. Actually, absolute pressure (MAP) is measured instead of vacuum. The MAP sensor is hanging on the firewall and will have a vacuum line and three wires going to it.
Thanks for all the help guys, is it relatively cheap or easy to change over to MAF? Or does the computer and a whole slew of other stuff need to be swapped out as well?
