My buddy has recently bought a 91 F150 4x4, It runs great but the only thing is that when you put it in reverse it chokes down, like its idled down too much and it chugs then shuts off. Its an auto by the way, I dont know what kind I assume a e4od. Its starting to do the same thing in forward also. We have played with the idle and now have it at 1100-1300 in park and it still chokes down. Now it does not want to go into overdrive when at highway speeds. What gives man? I know the autos of this era suck but man I cant fiqure it out, I assume its something to do with the electrical system on the trans but I dont know where to start. Any information would be helpful here.
Sounds like it might have a problem with the torque converter clutch. Try pulling the codes, the tranny will usually throw a code when it's got an electrical problem.
If nothing comes up then you could try wiring a switch to the torque converter clutch to diagnose the problem, a very simple procedure. Here's a thread with details: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...c-lock-up.html

Good call. MLPS is very prone to malfunctioning. Start there.
My 92 w/E4OD was doing the same thing, I figured it was the TC locking at idle, stalling the motor, in addition the TC would not lock when driving, I followed all the sugestions above, changed the tranny fluid and filter, still did it. Replaced the TPS and all was good.
