While driving my 88 F350 automatic with EFI 460, I noticed it won't shift into 4th gear, what could that be? Is there an adjustment I can make? How do I fix this one guys?
A 4 speed auto behind a 460 in 1988? What trans would that be? Too early for the E4OD, right? And a stock AOD won't take a 460's torque. Wouldn't it instead have the C6 3 speed? Maybe I missed something, maybe its been swapped out. But a E4OD needs a computer to shift it.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Nov-01 AT 11:55 PM (EST)]It may sound silly, but check it's fluid level, and it's condition.I'd take it to a tranny shop if the fluid level is fine, and it is it's normal color.Just have them check it over.If your truck was used for heavy towing&snowplowing(I think you said it had a snowplow on it),it could need work.If it has a lot of miles on it,it could be time for a rebuild.Have a shop take it on a quick testdrive. They'll be able to tell you the problem. It could be a simple fix,or it could be a problem.(The AOD was basically put behind 302s.Never behind a 460.The E4OD came out in 1990.)Hope everything works out for you.Good luck.
The E4OD is from "late" 1989. The first full model year of availability was 1990. I pulled an E4OD out of a 1989 model year donor with an August 1989 build date. Another month and the truck would have been a 1990.
If the original poster confused the specs of his truck, and it does indeed have the E4OD, then a possible explanation is the 4th gear lockout switch. Maybe it got bumped and is telling the computer not to use 4th.
You are correct on the C6 3 Speed. Sorry, I'm not used to these big trucks yet. But I took it to a shop, and they told me nothing is wrong with it, it's in great shape. It is in fact a C6 3 speed. Thank you for the input folks, I greatly appreciate it!
