Fan Removal

How the heck are you guys getting your fan off? I tried twice this weekend and I just can't get it off. The pulley is turning in belt when trying to turn the nut that connects the water pump to the fan clutch.

I am ready for some ideas. I got my intercooler stuff mounted for my Roush S/C but can't get the fan off.

Thanks,
Greg

On my PSD i used one of those rubber strap wrenchs around the pulley along with the appropriate fan clutch wrench....one swift smack on the fan clutch wrench and off she came. Don't know how well this will work for you but it worked great for me. Make sure you're going the right direction. ( I know -duh)

I bought the tool from a local automotive place, but it looks fairly generic. I would od as Scottie said or see if you can rent the proper tool from a local shop.

I got one from Autozone, seems like it should work. If the rain holds out I am going to attempt it tonight.

Back out one of the pulley bolts a turn or two. Then put a wrench on it and let it roll over until it touches the fan hub. Make sure the bolt does not tighten up before hitting the fan hub. A little penatrating lubricant on the hub a little bit before you try to remove it makes it easier. Then put the other wrenh on the fan hub. When you push on the hub wrench the other wrench can be held to stop the pulley from turning. Sometimes if you use a longer wrench on the pulley bolt it will spin until the wrench hits a bracket at holds the pulley still. Then the hub can be popped loose. Inteallation is the reverse. Then tighten up the losened pulley bolt. I hope I explained it good enough, it really does work.

I got it off last night. I am assuming my 1st night of trying to get it off must have helped a little bit. I got the water pump holder tool in place, spun it around so it was against the tensioner, put my HUGE crescent wrench on the fan hub, got ready for a big pull and hit myself right in the face. It came off that easy. Thanks for all the suggestions, they helped. I got the fan shroud cut, lower pulley on, and fan shimmed in preparation for the Roush install. I had already had my inter cooler, pump, wiring ran and mounted so it is getting closer. Thanks again for all the help.
