My new 08 F350 CC Lariat 4x4 SRW 172 w/6.4L. just showed up at the dealer last Thursday, Just so happens I am out of town for the net 2-3 weeks on a job. I called them about adding the reverse camera option on to the order (not knowing at the time that the truck was already delivered) I didn't receive a call back as promised on Friday, Does anyone know if that option can be dealer installed or is it only a factory installed option?
I have the camera on my 450, it looks like it would have to be factory installed, though I could be wrong. Mine shows a color pic in pic in my rear view mirror, works great. Now when I change my tailgate to a 5th wheel drop gate, I'll need a new camera installed in it. There is a "tuner" car shop down the road from me that advertises back up camera systems. You may be able to do that.
Thanks, I will have to look into that. I wanted to stay away from as much clutter as possible. I know that a system can be puchased from wally world for about $100.00 but I haven't looked that close to that brand either.
How is the factory back up camera can you see the ball on a bumper hitch for quick one stop hook-up? I have a 2004 right now and will be ordering a new dually want to get the factory camera I have a aftermarket in dash GPS, Stereo, DVD with back-up camera right now which I may move or will replace with a new in dash. Right now I Mount the camera on the back of my 34 foot 5th toy hauler when it is hooked up then unplug it and put it on the back bumper for hooking up pull behinds so I don't have to get in and out of the truck 3 times to get under the hitch,it has a plug and magnet mount but it is kind of a pain so would be nice to have the camera on the back also.
In the factory system the camera itself is mounted in the tailgate latch bezel. You can hardly tell it is there. The screen in the mirror shows two verticle guide lines and some cross hatches to represent distance, I am pretty sure you can see the hitch ball.
HDway:
Yeah, you can see your rear bumper, I have a chrome plug in the reciever, I can see it perfectly. Also along with the camera "ORDER" the rear back up sensor option, together those work in concert, it's great. BUT when hooking up to a trailer, TURN OFF the rear sensor, unless you like all that beeping etc.(there is a off switch on the dash)
Hey Boatfloater:
You get a very wide angle field of view, without much distortion. There are lines built in to the picture going back toward where you're backing. The fartherst away is green, then closer yellow, then red. These lines in your picture show the position of the truck and where you'd hit something. It is very close to your eyesight and judgement if you were standing there looking.
I figured with how much the truck costs already, an extra $150-$200 won't matter. I ordered everything BUT (snowplow prep, extra HD springs, rear DVD,Sync system), it's loaded up pretty good. Then after I got it, I did Linex in the bed, Tri-fecta tonneau cover, chrome door handle trim, bugshield, then topped it all off with a Harley chrome front liscense plate cover. I took some inheritence money and paid cash, it's the 1st new vehicle I ever did that to....But I'd rather have my Dad back and NO truck.

My trailer was under roof, but tongue outside of roof. About a foot of snow on the ground. Even with six tires on ground, I expected at least a half dozen attmepts to hook up. NOT SO>
When I backed up I could see the black line on factory camera which is dead center of tailgate and lined it up to dead center of trailer. Also, the sensor sound gives you the distance, as it goes solid if you hit.
First time in my life, I backed the trailer under tongue, and lowered trailer onto ball.
One must remember, my F-350 is 22' - 4" long. Reminded me of the TV commercial with the kid that made the hole in one and no one around to see it done. I felt the same way.
Thanks for the info guy's I have the back up sensors on my 2004 now as well as the after market camera and will order both on the new truck so I don't have to move the camera from the back of my own trailer when I move trailers around the lot.
