Currently have 2000 f250 with v10 gasser with 165,000 miles on it. Get 7 miles to gallon towing 5000# cargo trailer around town. Use it for my business. Get writeoffs. I'm trying to figure out if it would be a good idea to go with 2008 6.4 diesel for what I'm doing. I see so many different mileage estimates my head is spinning. Here are the numbers for what i do.
20,000 miles a year driven.
At 7 miles a gallon i use about 2850 gallons of fuel
at 3 bucks a gallon it costs about $7500 a year.
What kind of numbers are you guys getting with similar setups? Thanks
I spend usually around $4000 a year on fuel without towing anything, around 20 000 miles driven per year as well. Thats with the 6.0, around town you won't see a huge difference in mpg's. Big difference for me comes on long highway drives
Deckvend, I own both a '99 V10 and a 2008 6.4 They both get about the same mpgs. The v10 about 8-9 the 6.4 about 9-10 Of course the diesel has much more practical pulling power, however, one must be careful with the correct winter time fuel in cold climates (Montana). Otherwise I'd say they are about even in their ability to get the job done. I use mine as wildland fire trucks. I guess now you'll have to weigh the financial hit of a new 2008 6.4 against the likelyhood of failure in a gas vehicle with 165,000 miles on it and no warranty.
Easy answer....the diesel is the better choice. It will save $ in the long run. we had a 05 V-10 and now a 08 6.4L. They are both good engines but they are very different and designed to do different things.

I get 10/11 towing a 13K plus 5th wheel
20K miles a year ar 10MPG =2000 gals at todays price of diesel 3.359=6718.00
You should get better MPG pulling a 5K trailer.
Might want to ask this same question in the superduty forum or V10 forum. You should expect to get a biased answer here. I know lots of guys love there V10's.
So far my '99 v10 has been relatively trouble free. Sadly, I cannot say that about my 2004 6.0. I had to replace some injectors at 55,000 and the entire engine at 63,00. I had no modifications on it and I drive sensibly. My 6.4 is too new to tell what its history will be (less than 2,000 miles). I sure hope it is reliable. I like the warranty on the diesel, however, that is only because I fear it will have to be used. The warranty work on my 2004 was itemized at near 20,000 dollars. Thank God it was under warranty. Admittedly, my opinion is based on a limited sample but I think its pretty close to being unbiased.
You save about $1100 a year with the diesel over the gas truck (fuel costs only of course). You might consider a new V10 though. I'd be surprised if you only got 7mpg with a newer V10, and you'd save the initial cost of the diesel.

I never thought that I would ever say this since I own a 04 6.0 power stroke....but......buy the V-10. Did I just say that? LOL
I was the one bagging on the V-10 in all those other posts..........be nice guys!! Honestly though the V-10 will get similiar mpgs and will most likely not be in the shop for several years to come!! Jeez I can't believe I am saying this! Ok you V-10 guys you win!
Now if you asked me 6.0 or V-10 I'd say 6.0 just cuz of the better mpg's!!
It really comes down to how much you want to spend on the truck.
The 6.4 and the V10 are going to get the same mileage towing that weight in town. Highway pulling with the diesel will be better but in the city, you will not notice any difference.
And with diesel fuel costing more and the higher maintenace costs, you won't be recouping any of that money.
Maybe you need to ask yourself if you really need a truck this large to tow 5k in the city?
Yeah, although I posted based on the info in other posts I don't think you'll get 7mpg with the newer V10, so the difference in fuel I posted isn't realistic. You'll likely get close to 10 mpg towing 5000 in town with a V10, so the fuel price will likely be higher with the diesel than the V10.
Pulling 5k lbs with either engine isn't going to be of concern for the truck and kind of a waste with either engine (both can do 2 - 3x that weight), but if you're looking for a SD then the V10 will likely be most cost effective for what you're doing.
Absolutely Dustin. I also like your location. I don't know why, except it's probably one of the longest set of two words I've ever seen. Is it a real place?
i've just decided to stick with my v-10 and run it into the ground. You guys have been great with all of the advice. It doesn't seem worth spending 45k to save on gas. The 6.4s don't seem to be impressing me enough yet to pull the trigger anyway. I spent a few hours with a sales weasel tonight and got thoroughly sick of the haggling process. Just give me an f***ing price and lets be done with i thought! Good thing he never did or i woudn't have come to my senses and left. Thanks
listen to ace, the 3valve v-10 and torqueshift is a powerfull towing machine. the 05 and newer v-10 will easily tow 10-15k and keep up in trafic and highway speeds.
