56 running boards

Finally got my 56 F100.
In the garage and needs a few things for sure. One was the sections of rust on the running boards...read or saw a post here of a fellow member who made his own stamp and pressed out a few of the ribs and welded the new ones in.
Does anyone remember this thread and who did thi work??
I would like to see if I could buy a few of these from him and weld them into my project.
Let me know if you remember and thanks!

Randy is on here all the time... I don't know a lot about the best way to find him... but if you do a search for Randy Jack and look through the posts that come up, you can PM him.... I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't chime in here before too long as well.

Chiming in......

Mick -

I saw from your profile that you are in MA and that you don't have a gallery yet. The patches I did for Steve had to go to TN, so MA is no biggy. I would be glad to help you if I can.

I need to know how big a patch you will need. The die I made has only one rib in it and I formed it in my bench vise with the help of a 5-foot long piece of pipe. Even at that, I darn near busted the vise. Post some pics of your boards with the bad areas marked with fat felt pen (so they show in the pics), and we can go from there.

If you need help figuring out how to start a gallery, look at the "sticky" thread at the top of our forum page called "Help to Post Pictures" for directions.

later...

That looks like pretty extensive damage. I think I would look around to see if you could find some in better shape. Unless, that is, you have lots of time to deal with these. Just my opinion.

If that were my running board I would be checking out the local Flame Spray Inc facility. There's one here in San Diego and these guys can literally spray any type of metal onto any time of surface. I have some fenders off my 35 Chevy coupe that have that "swiss cheese" look...they sprayed new steel over the holes and built up all the thin areas. See the ads in some of the restoration mags, this stuff works great. On the other hand, new running boards aren't too expensive either....

Mick - I have to agree with Larry that you really should be looking at new running boards. Sorry. The die I made only makes one bead in a piece about 10" long. It looks like you need a lot more area than that and would have to piece a few of those patches together. In any event, I don't have an idea how to handle the damage in the radiussed area.

CharlieLed has a great idea. I hadn't thought of that. Maybe you could check out that possibility before spending on new boards. I would expect that to be at least as expensive an option as new boards, although I have never priced it.
